At Serotonin Melbourne, we provide a sanctuary to escape from our fast-paced lives. Optimal health requires a holistic approach and is why Serotonin integrates a nourishing eatery, exercise centre and education platform to our thriving community. Our ethos is based around eating a plant-based diet to ensure the body, mind and earth all function at their best.
Emily our founder, sought a place where she could be motivated daily and connect with like minded individuals looking to embrace a positive lifestyle. She longed for a 'no-brainer menu', where every dish was nourishing and remove the need to narrow it down to one ‘healthy option’. With a gap in the market and a strong need for change, Emily decided to create the ultimate Happiness Center- Serotonin Eatery.
The world is shifting. There is a movement growing and Serotonin is at the forefront. Our wellness centre is focused on facilitating those who wish to relearn the importance of health and happiness whilst simplifying this process. Serotonin is a reminder that health and happiness does not need to be complex and can be achieved with little effort.

Emily Hazell is the founder and sole owner of Serotonin Eatery, Exercise + Education. She is also an interior architect and a graphic designer. She was just 16 when she started saving for her first business. She previously worked for the Commonwealth Bank, ran a nanny agency, and photography business for 8 years while saving for her vision cafe Serotonin Eatery! Serotonin Eatery is her 3rd business. 

Emily has built an oasis in Melbourne that helps people escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A place that has become a sanctuary for busy people who need a moment to chill out away from the pressure of their fast-paced life. She opened her Happiness Centre with the vision of changing minds and lives with mental health education and awareness. Emily is the visionary who creates Serotonin eatery, education and exercise to become the leading facility in happiness and health education. She has a passion for living and promoting a plant-based lifestyle through her Happiness Centre and works closely with nutritionists, psychologists, food scientists, and dieticians to provide accessible, credible information to her guests. As optimal health requires a holistic approach, Serotonin integrates both a nourishing Eatery, a FREE Exercise program for the community, and an education & event centre Utopia.

Beyond serving up wholesome, happiness-inducing fare, Emily uses Serotonin Eatery as a space to teach the young generation about physical and mental wellbeing through education workshops – and answer the same questions she had at their age. Emily, a self-proclaimed serotonin dealer, aims to steer the young generation away from unhealthy relationships with food and teach them her ethos, based on eating a plant-based diet to ensure the body, mind, and earth all function at their best. 

It was around their age that she started experiencing mood swings and anxiety. She endured it for years before, at 21, a doctor spoke with her for 15 minutes about her mental state and recommended antidepressants. Not one to settle for the first diagnostic, Emily delved into research on natural happiness before switching her diet to lift her moods. 

Her Happiness centre oozes the philosophy that you can reach optimal physical and mental health with a plant-based diet that’s high in serotonin-triggering components. This led her to create the Serotonin formula, after 5 years of research, which includes 12 steps that provide a balanced lifestyle. The formula includes diet and exercise, meditation and volunteering in the community, to family engagement. 

 As a permanent innovator, she set herself high goals to reach to become a leader in her field of expertise. She makes a point of putting aside a few days to herself every few months – whether it be in Byron Bay or Bali – to write down her goals for the next quarter, and assess the last’s, it is what she calls manifesting. She truly believes that if you tell yourself you’re going to do something and you seek that out in the world, it will happen. She truly empowers her team not as cafe staff but as contributors to her mission of contributing to a healthy lifestyle for their patrons through education into diet, exercise, mindfulness and meditation. Her team mission isn’t limited to running a cafe but to change the world.

Her next challenges are to expand Serotonin and to have a string of Happiness AirBnBs – some of which she has already rolled out. The happiness Serotonin AirBnbs includes all the things she wanted when she get to a new place – the nearest yoga classes, bike paths, healthy food options, and in-home massages and facials, one of her other ways to empower people to live their best life!
